My Story - Cooking and Gardening: A Journey of Passion
Welcome to my website, where my two great passions, cooking and gardening, come together. For as long as I can remember, I have found immense joy in cooking and creating wholesome meals from scratch. There's something magical about being able to transform fresh ingredients into delicious dishes that bring happiness to those around me. The best part? Seeing my friends and family come back for seconds! Although it does present a challenge when eating out, as it's tough to find restaurants that match the quality of our home-cooked meals that don’t cost an arm and a leg. But hey, I take it as a compliment!
To truly create exceptional meals, one needs great ingredients. And that's where my love for gardening comes in. I was fortunate to grow up in a family of passionate gardeners. While my mom took care of the beautiful flower beds, fern house, and house plants, my dad was the vegetable expert. As a child, I cherished the moments spent with them in the garden, digging in the dirt and embracing the joy of getting messy. Our family home, built in 1940, sits on a sizable plot of land that used to be surrounded by vibrant market gardens cultivated by Italian families. These gardens provided a constant source of inspiration and an abundance of fresh produce, including incredible herbs, for both themselves, the local markets (and us of course).
We sadly lost my mom a few years ago, but my 97-year-old dad still resides in our family home, tending to a slightly smaller vegetable garden each day but still amazingly active. He even takes care of all of my mum's beloved plants, mows his own lawns and on occasion, he allows me to lend a hand!
My Gardening Journey - Growing Food, Growing Joy
Throughout my life, I have experienced a variety of living situations, from apartments with no backyard to expansive five-acre properties teeming with wildlife. But no matter where I've lived, one thing has remained constant—my plants have always accompanied me. Over the past 40 years, I have refined my expertise in growing all types of herbs, vegetables, and fruits in all type of homes.
Whilst I have built and tended rather large gardens in my younger years, I now favor smaller kitchen gardens that take much less effort to construct, plant and maintain. These small, attractive, and productive food gardens are accessible to everyone. I understand the challenges of renting and the need for a "transportable" garden. Having overcome these challenges myself, I am here to help others facing the same circumstances.
I have grown pretty much every vegetable you can think of over my time, but you learn pretty quickly to focus on varieties suited to your region and your family's preferences. Wasting food has always bothered me, so I strive to grow what we truly enjoy. One of the greatest delights has been watching my children, when they were little, eagerly plucking fresh beans, peas, and sweet corn straight from the garden. Even today, we still have fruit trees in pots that I started years ago, and I'm certain the new owners of our previous properties are relishing the fruits of my labor (pardon the pun) of trees we could not move.
From Challenges to Creativity - Embracing Gardening in Any Space
Whether I was living on our acreage property or in rental homes with limitations, my determination to garden never wavered. I've encountered various challenges, but I've learned to adapt and find solutions. From utilizing raised beds and containers to embracing vertical gardens, I've conquered the obstacles of limited space and orientation. Sunlight has been my ally, but I've also come to appreciate the shade cast by established trees and structures, as they've added their own charm (and challenges) to my gardening journey.
Teaching and Sharing - Empowering Others to Grow and Coo*
Beyond my own gardening and cooking adventures, teaching holds a special place in my heart. However, my style of teaching is far from traditional classrooms. I derive immense satisfaction from imparting practical knowledge and life skills to others. Guiding people, especially my family and friends, in the art of simple home cooking, growing their own organic food, and utilizing herbs for year-round enjoyment brings me immense joy.
And now, this website is the manifestation of my passions—a union of food gardening, cooking, and teaching. My aim is to help beginner gardeners and food enthusiasts, like yourself, learn how to grow and use fresh organic herbs, fruits, and vegetables. Whether you have a spacious backyard or a cozy balcony, I believe everyone can experience the joys of cultivating their own vibrant garden.
Let me share my expertise, tips, and tricks with you, so you can embark on a rewarding journey of gardening, no matter your location or the size of your space, and learn from my mistakes so you don't have to.
Thank you for joining me on this exciting adventure. Let's cultivate and cook together, embracing the wonders of fresh, organic ingredients every step of the way. And remember, just like the mint plant that has been growing for 50 years at our family home, some things in life are truly timeless and bring us a sense of connection and nostalgia.
